ABOUT JPG TO PNG

Convert JPG and JPEG Images to PNG

Use JPG to PNG to convert a JPG or JPEG image into PNG format directly in your browser.

The tool processes one image at a time and creates a PNG version using the source image's decoded pixel dimensions.

The conversion changes the image format from JPEG to PNG. It does not intentionally resize, crop, rotate, flip, or remove the background from the image.

FORMAT CONVERSION

What Happens When JPG Is Converted to PNG

The selected JPG or JPEG image is decoded by the browser and drawn onto an HTML5 canvas at its natural pixel dimensions.

The rendered pixels are then encoded into PNG format.

The resulting file uses the PNG image format while retaining the pixel dimensions used by the decoded source image.

The conversion does not intentionally resize, crop, rotate, or flip the image.

IMAGE QUALITY

Does JPG to PNG Improve Image Quality?

PNG uses lossless encoding for the pixel data being saved, while JPEG is a lossy image format.

However, converting an existing JPEG image to PNG cannot restore image information that was already removed or altered by previous JPEG compression.

The PNG output represents the pixels decoded from the source JPEG without intentionally applying another JPEG compression step.

For this reason, JPG to PNG should be treated as a format-conversion tool rather than an image-quality enhancement tool.

TRANSPARENCY

Does JPG to PNG Create a Transparent Background?

No. Converting a JPG or JPEG image to PNG does not automatically make its background transparent.

JPEG images do not contain an alpha transparency channel. Existing white, black, or other opaque image areas remain part of the image after conversion.

The current JPG to PNG workflow does not provide background removal, color-to-transparent conversion, or transparency-editing controls.

If you need to remove an image background, use a tool specifically designed for that operation.

IMAGE DIMENSIONS

Original Pixel Dimensions

JPG to PNG creates the output canvas using the decoded image's natural width and height.

The conversion does not intentionally scale the image to different dimensions.

For example, if the decoded JPG is 1920 × 1080 pixels, the PNG output is created using a 1920 × 1080 pixel canvas.

Use Resize Image separately if you need to change image width or height.

FILE SIZE

Why Can the PNG Be Larger Than the JPG?

A PNG created from a photographic JPEG can be substantially larger than the source JPG.

JPEG uses lossy compression designed to reduce photographic image file sizes, while PNG uses lossless compression for the encoded pixel data.

Changing a JPEG to PNG therefore does not mean that the resulting file will be smaller.

Actual output size depends on the image dimensions, pixel content, and browser PNG encoding behavior.

If reducing file size is your main goal, use Compress Image instead of assuming that PNG conversion will reduce the file size.

OUTPUT CONSIDERATIONS

Metadata and Color Information

The source JPEG is decoded by the browser, rendered through HTML5 canvas, and encoded into a new PNG file.

Because the generated PNG is created from rendered pixel data, source metadata such as EXIF or GPS information should not be assumed to remain in the output.

Source color-profile information and other JPEG-specific metadata should also not be assumed to remain identical after conversion.

Review the generated PNG if metadata, color behavior, orientation, or exact reproduction is important for your workflow.

JPG TO PNG OR COMPRESS IMAGE?

Format Conversion vs. File Compression

JPG to PNG changes an image from JPEG format to PNG format while keeping the decoded pixel dimensions.

Compress Image is designed primarily for reducing image file size using encoding-quality controls or a target maximum file size.

Converting JPG to PNG can increase file size, especially for photographic images.

Use JPG to PNG when PNG format is your requirement.

Use Compress Image when reducing file size is your main requirement.

JPG TO PNG OR RESIZE IMAGE?

Format Conversion vs. Dimension Resizing

JPG to PNG changes the image format without intentionally changing its pixel dimensions.

Resize Image changes the width and height of an image using custom pixel dimensions or percentage scaling.

Use JPG to PNG when you need PNG output.

Use Resize Image when changing image dimensions is your main requirement.

DEVICE & PERFORMANCE

Performance When Converting JPG to PNG

Conversion performance can depend on the source file size, pixel dimensions, image content, available browser memory, browser implementation, and device resources. A compressed JPG can require substantially more memory after it is decoded into pixel data for canvas processing. Large or high-resolution images can therefore require additional memory and processing time during decoding, canvas rendering, and PNG encoding. PNG output can also be considerably larger than the source JPEG, particularly for photographic images.

IMPORTANT SUBMISSION GUIDANCE

Check Your PNG Before Submission

If you are converting an image for an application, examination, educational institution, employer, government portal, or another important submission, check the latest requirements from the relevant official source. Before submitting, verify the required image format, pixel dimensions, file size, orientation, readability, and any other applicable requirements. Converting a JPG to PNG does not guarantee that the resulting image meets a third-party upload requirement. EditPDFImage.com cannot guarantee acceptance by a third-party portal or organization.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions — JPG to PNG

Common Questions About Converting JPG and JPEG Images to PNG

What does the JPG to PNG tool do?

JPG to PNG converts a JPG or JPEG image into PNG format directly in your browser. The output is created from the decoded source image at its natural pixel dimensions without intentionally resizing, cropping, rotating, or flipping the image.

Which image formats can I convert with JPG to PNG?

The current JPG to PNG tool accepts JPG and JPEG images with the .jpg or .jpeg extension and image/jpeg MIME type. The generated output is a PNG image.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. PNG uses lossless encoding for the pixel data being saved, but converting an existing JPEG to PNG cannot restore detail or image information that was already lost through JPEG compression. The conversion changes the file format rather than enhancing the source image.

Does JPG to PNG use WebAssembly?

No. The current JPG to PNG conversion workflow uses browser-native image decoding, HTML5 Canvas, and client-side JavaScript. It does not use WebAssembly for the conversion operation.

Does converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. JPEG images do not contain an alpha transparency channel, and converting a JPG or JPEG to PNG does not automatically remove or make the existing background transparent. White, black, and other opaque image areas remain part of the converted image.

Does converting JPG to PNG change the image dimensions?

The conversion does not intentionally resize the image. The output canvas is created using the decoded image's natural width and height, so the PNG is generated using those pixel dimensions.

Why can the converted PNG be larger than the original JPG?

JPEG uses lossy compression that is effective for reducing the size of photographic images, while PNG uses lossless compression for the encoded pixel data. As a result, a PNG created from a JPEG photograph can be substantially larger than the original JPG. Actual file size depends on the image dimensions, pixel content, and browser encoding behavior.

Does JPG to PNG preserve EXIF, GPS, or other image metadata?

The JPEG image is decoded by the browser, rendered through HTML5 canvas, and encoded into a new PNG file. Source metadata such as EXIF, GPS information, and other JPEG metadata should not be assumed to remain in the generated PNG. Review the output if metadata or color-profile information is important.

Do I need an account to convert JPG to PNG?

No. You can use the JPG to PNG tool without creating an account or signing in.

Are my JPG files uploaded to EditPDFImage.com during conversion?

JPG to PNG conversion operations run locally within your browser. Files processed within your browser are not intentionally uploaded to EditPDFImage.com servers.
