ABOUT CROP IMAGE

Crop an Image in Your Browser

Use Crop Image to extract a rectangular area from a JPG, JPEG, PNG, or WebP image.

The tool provides a free crop mode together with Square (1:1), Landscape (16:9), and Standard (4:3) aspect-ratio presets.

The crop area is configured using percentage-based Selection Width and Selection Height controls. The resulting crop is calculated against the source image's original pixel dimensions before the selected region is drawn into the output image.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

How to Crop an Image

1

Select Image

Choose a supported JPG, JPEG, PNG, or WebP image from your device.

2

Choose Crop Mode

Select Free crop, Square (1:1), Landscape (16:9), or Standard (4:3).

3

Adjust the Crop Selection

Use the Selection Width and Selection Height controls to configure the crop region. In fixed aspect-ratio modes, the selection dimensions follow the chosen ratio.

4

Review the Preview

Review the crop selection shown over the image before processing.

5

Process and Download

Process the image using the available crop action, then download the generated cropped image when processing is complete.

CROP MODES

Free Crop and Fixed Aspect Ratios

Crop Image provides four crop modes.

Free crop allows the crop width and height to be adjusted independently using the available selection controls.

Square (1:1) creates a crop region with equal width and height proportions.

Landscape (16:9) creates a wide crop region using a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Standard (4:3) creates a crop region using a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The fixed presets define geometric aspect ratios. They are not platform-specific social-media presets.

CROP CONTROLS

Adjust the Crop Selection

The current Crop Image workspace uses percentage-based controls to configure the crop region.

Selection Width controls the width of the crop region relative to the source image.

Selection Height controls its height when Free crop is active.

When a fixed aspect-ratio preset is selected, the crop dimensions are coordinated according to that ratio.

The visual overlay helps you review the selected crop area before processing.

The current workspace does not use direct on-image dragging or draggable resize handles to position and resize the crop box.

OUTPUT DIMENSIONS

How the Cropped Image Size Is Calculated

The crop coordinates and dimensions are stored relative to the source image and converted into pixel coordinates using the image's natural width and height.

The selected source region is then drawn into an output canvas matching the calculated crop width and height.

The crop operation extracts that selected region without intentionally scaling it to a different output resolution.

For example, if the calculated crop region is 1200 × 800 pixels, the output canvas is created at approximately 1200 × 800 pixels.

CROP OR RESIZE?

Crop Image vs. Resize Image

Crop Image removes areas outside a selected rectangular region and creates an image from the selected portion.

Resize Image scales the complete image to different width and height dimensions.

Use Crop Image when you want to keep only part of an image.

Use Resize Image when you want to keep the entire image but change its dimensions.

ASPECT RATIOS

Understanding 1:1, 16:9, and 4:3 Crops

An aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between the width and height of the crop region.

Square (1:1) uses equal width and height proportions.

Landscape (16:9) creates a wider rectangular selection.

Standard (4:3) creates a moderately wide rectangular selection.

These presets control the shape of the selected crop area. They do not guarantee suitability for a particular website, social platform, application, or submission requirement.

OUTPUT CONSIDERATIONS

Format, Transparency, and Metadata

The selected crop region is drawn using browser canvas processing and encoded into the generated image.

The current workflow does not provide a separate output-format selector and uses the supported source image MIME format when creating the cropped output.

Formats such as PNG and WebP can support transparency. Actual output behavior can depend on the source image, selected format, and browser implementation.

Because the image is rendered and re-encoded through canvas processing, source metadata such as EXIF, GPS information, and ICC profile data should not be assumed to remain in the generated file.

Review the downloaded image when metadata, transparency, color behavior, or exact visual reproduction is important.

ARCHITECTURE & PRIVACY

Browser-Side Image Processing

Image cropping operations run locally within your browser.

LOCAL PROCESSING

The Crop Image tool is designed to use your browser and device resources to process image files.

NO ACCOUNT REQUIRED

Use the Crop Image tool without creating an account or signing in.

PRIVACY-CONSCIOUS DESIGN

Files processed within your browser are not intentionally uploaded to EditPDFImage.com servers.

DEVICE & PERFORMANCE

Performance When Cropping Images

Crop performance can depend on the source image file size, pixel dimensions, crop dimensions, available browser memory, browser implementation, and device resources. Large or high-resolution images can require additional memory while the browser decodes the source image, displays the preview, creates the output canvas, and encodes the cropped image. Performance may vary between devices and browsers when working with very large images.

IMPORTANT SUBMISSION GUIDANCE

Check Your Cropped Image Before Submission

If you are cropping an image for an application, examination, educational institution, employer, government portal, or another important submission, check the latest requirements from the relevant official source. Before submitting, verify the actual image format, pixel dimensions, file size, aspect ratio, orientation, readability, and any other applicable requirements. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions — Crop Image

Common Questions About Cropping Images

What does the Crop Image tool do?

Crop Image lets you extract a rectangular region from a JPG, JPEG, PNG, or WebP image. You can use Free crop or choose one of the available fixed aspect-ratio presets before processing and downloading the cropped image.

Which image formats can I crop?

The current Crop Image tool supports JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP images. The workspace processes one supported image at a time.

Which crop aspect ratios are available?

The available options are Free crop, Square (1:1), Landscape (16:9), and Standard (4:3). Free crop allows the selection width and height to be adjusted independently, while the fixed presets maintain their specified proportions.

Can I drag the crop box directly on the image?

No. The current Crop Image workspace uses Selection Width and Selection Height controls to configure the crop region rather than direct on-image dragging or draggable resize handles. The visual overlay lets you review the selected crop area before processing.

Does cropping resize the selected part of the image?

The crop operation is designed to extract the selected source-image region at its calculated pixel dimensions rather than intentionally scaling that region to a different resolution. The resulting dimensions depend on the crop selection and the original image dimensions.

What is the difference between Crop Image and Resize Image?

Crop Image keeps a selected rectangular portion of an image and removes the areas outside that selection. Resize Image keeps the complete image but changes its width and height. Use Crop Image when you need only part of an image and Resize Image when you need different dimensions for the full image.

Does Crop Image use WebAssembly?

No. The current Crop Image processing workflow uses browser-native image loading, HTML5 Canvas, and client-side JavaScript. It does not use WebAssembly for the crop operation.

Does cropping preserve image metadata?

The image is rendered and re-encoded through browser canvas processing, so source metadata such as EXIF, GPS information, and ICC profile data should not be assumed to remain in the cropped output. Review the generated file if metadata or color-profile information is important.

Do I need an account to crop images?

No. You can use the Crop Image tool without creating an account or signing in.

Are my images uploaded to EditPDFImage.com while I crop them?

Image cropping operations run locally within your browser. Files processed within your browser are not intentionally uploaded to EditPDFImage.com servers.
