ABOUT HEIC TO PNG

Convert HEIC and HEIF Images to PNG

Use HEIC to PNG to convert a supported HEIC or HEIF image into PNG format directly in your browser.

The tool processes one supported image file at a time and creates a PNG output from the image decoded by the browser-side HEIC/HEIF processing workflow.

The conversion changes the image format to PNG. It does not intentionally resize, crop, flip, or otherwise alter the image dimensions as part of the format-conversion workflow.

Click "Download File" to save the generated PNG image to your device.

HEIC & HEIF DECODING

How Browser-Side Conversion Works

HEIC and HEIF files require decoding before their image pixels can be encoded into PNG format.

The current HEIC to PNG workflow uses a client-side HEIC/HEIF decoding library (heic2any), which utilizes a WebAssembly build of libheif to decode HEIC and HEIF image containers directly within your browser without requiring a server-side image-conversion service.

After decoding, the image is rendered onto an HTML5 Canvas and encoded into PNG format using browser-native APIs.

HEIC/HEIF decoding can require additional browser memory, particularly for large or high-resolution images.

PNG OUTPUT

What Happens When HEIC Is Converted to PNG

The selected HEIC or HEIF file is decoded into image data using heic2any (libheif WebAssembly) and then rendered onto an HTML5 Canvas to encode into PNG format.

The generated PNG uses the decoded image dimensions and is not intentionally resized as part of the conversion.

PNG uses lossless raster encoding for the generated file, but converting an existing HEIC image does not restore quality or detail that was not present in the source.

Review the generated PNG when exact visual reproduction or file suitability is important.

TRANSPARENCY

PNG and Transparent Image Areas

PNG supports alpha transparency.

Where the decoded image contains transparent or semi-transparent areas, the current PNG output workflow does not composite those areas against an opaque background.

This allows transparent areas from the decoded image to be retained in the generated PNG.

IMAGE DIMENSIONS

Original Decoded Pixel Dimensions

HEIC to PNG is designed to create the PNG using the natural pixel dimensions of the decoded source image.

The conversion does not intentionally resize, upscale, downscale, or crop the image.

For example, if the decoded source image is 4032 × 3024 pixels, the PNG output is created using those decoded dimensions.

Use Resize Image separately if changing width or height is your main requirement.

METADATA

Metadata in the Generated PNG

HEIC and HEIF containers can contain information beyond the visible image pixels.

The current conversion workflow does not guarantee preservation of source metadata such as EXIF information, GPS data, capture dates, camera information, XMP data, or embedded color-profile metadata.

The image may appear in the expected visual orientation after decoding without the original orientation metadata being copied into the PNG.

Do not rely on the generated PNG to retain source metadata.

If metadata is important for your workflow, inspect the downloaded PNG before using it.

FILE SIZE & QUALITY

Will the PNG Be Smaller Than the HEIC?

No specific file-size reduction is guaranteed.

HEIC/HEIF and PNG use completely different compression methods.

The generated PNG may be larger than the original HEIC file because PNG is a lossless format.

Converting to PNG should therefore be treated primarily as a format-compatibility conversion rather than a file compression operation.

Use Compress Image when controlling image file size is your main requirement.

HEIC TO PNG OR COMPRESS IMAGE?

Format Conversion vs. File Compression

HEIC to PNG converts a supported HEIC or HEIF source image into PNG format.

Compress Image is designed primarily for controlling image file size using its available compression workflows.

Use HEIC to PNG when PNG output is your main requirement.

Use Compress Image when reducing or targeting image file size is your main requirement.

DEVICE & PERFORMANCE

Performance When Converting HEIC or HEIF to PNG

HEIC/HEIF conversion performance can depend on the source file size, decoded pixel dimensions, image content, decoder implementation, available browser memory, browser environment, and device resources. A compressed HEIC or HEIF file can require substantially more memory after it is decoded into image pixels. Large or high-resolution photos can therefore require additional memory and processing time during HEIC/HEIF decoding, image preparation, canvas rendering where applicable, and PNG encoding. Performance may vary between browsers and devices.

IMPORTANT SUBMISSION GUIDANCE

Check Your PNG Before Submission

If you are converting an image for an application, examination, educational institution, employer, government portal, or another important submission, check the latest requirements from the relevant official source. Before submitting, verify that PNG is an accepted format and check the actual pixel dimensions, file size, orientation, readability, background appearance, and any other applicable requirements. Converting a HEIC or HEIF image to PNG does not guarantee that the resulting image meets a third-party upload requirement. EditPDFImage.com cannot guarantee acceptance by a third-party portal or organization.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions — HEIC to PNG

Common Questions About Converting HEIC and HEIF Images to PNG

What does the HEIC to PNG tool do?

HEIC to PNG converts a supported HEIC or HEIF image into PNG format directly in your browser. The tool processes one supported file at a time and creates a PNG output from the decoded image.

Which image formats can I convert with HEIC to PNG?

The current HEIC to PNG tool accepts HEIC and HEIF image files supported by its upload validation and browser-side decoding workflow. The generated output uses PNG format.

Does HEIC to PNG use WebAssembly?

Yes. The current HEIC to PNG workflow uses a client-side HEIC decoder library (heic2any), which utilizes a WebAssembly build of libheif to decode HEIC and HEIF image containers directly within your browser without uploading files to a server.

Can I adjust PNG quality settings or compression?

No. The current HEIC to PNG tool does not provide custom compression sliders or quality controls. The PNG file is created using the standard browser PNG encoding path.

Does converting HEIC to PNG change the image dimensions?

The conversion does not intentionally resize the image. The generated PNG uses the natural pixel dimensions of the image produced by the HEIC/HEIF decoding workflow.

Does HEIC to PNG preserve EXIF, GPS, or capture-date metadata?

The current HEIC to PNG workflow does not guarantee preservation of source metadata such as EXIF information, GPS data, capture dates, camera information, or other HEIC/HEIF metadata. Do not rely on the generated PNG to retain those source metadata fields.

Are transparent areas preserved when converting HEIC to PNG?

PNG supports alpha transparency. If the decoded source image contains transparent or semi-transparent areas, the current workflow does not apply an opaque white background, allowing transparent areas to be represented in the PNG output.

Will converting HEIC to PNG improve the original photo quality?

No. PNG is a lossless output format, but converting from an existing HEIC image does not restore quality or detail that was not present in the original source image.

Do I need an account to convert HEIC or HEIF to PNG?

No. You can use the HEIC to PNG tool without creating an account or signing in.

Are my HEIC or HEIF files uploaded to EditPDFImage.com during conversion?

HEIC to PNG conversion operations run locally within your browser. Files processed within your browser are not intentionally uploaded to EditPDFImage.com servers.
